General Information for Year 2

Reading Books

Home reading books will be changed once per week. Please comment in the reading record book to say you have listened to your child read. Remind your child to put their reading book in the class box when they would like it changed. We cannot change books if the old one has not been returned.

Library Books

Library books will be changed on a Wednesday. We cannot give a new library book out until they have returned the last one.

PE will be on a Wednesday. Please bring in shorts and T-shirt clearly labelled with your child's name.

Home Learning Books

Please complete the activities in the book at your leisure. Each home learning sheet lasts for half a term.

There are also numerous activities available on Abacus Bug Club for your child to access at home.

Coats, Water Bottles and Snack

Please ensure your child has a coat as the cooler, wetter weather is approaching. Make sure all items are labelled clearly. Water bottles and fruit snacks are allowed but please remember we are a healthy school so we do expect water in the water bottle.

Dates for your Diary

Trip - Thursday 26th September

Parents' evening - Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th October

We teach through half term or termly contexts for learning and will keep you updated on what exciting experiences we have got planned each week. Please see below for an overview of our context for learning which will give you an idea of what exciting experiences the children may have during the context.

Cardiff Tales - Half Termly Overview

W/B 16th September

This week we will be programming and debugging Beebots to move around obstacle courses. Pupils will be completing some map work and comparing features of Cardiff City Centre and Pontprennau. We will also be using water colours to paint pictures of Cardiff Landmarks. Children will also have a chance to innovate the story of 'The Enormous Crocodile' by Roald Dahl.

W/B 23rd September

We have been really pleased with how hard the children have been working in year 2, especially with their writing. This week the children will have the opportunity to write a postcard to Mrs Clee or Ms Dykes to tell them all about our lovely trip. We are also working hard to recognise capital letters and full stops within our writing. In Maths we will continue to work on addition and subtraction and using our bonds to 10. Pupils will also have the opportunity to use the Hwb to program a 'sprite'.

W/B 30th September

The children worked hard this week to create leaflets about Cardiff based on their trip last week. We are so proud of their writing and use of adjectives - well done year 2.

                                                      W/B 7th October

This week pupils will have the opportunities to write a diary entry. They will also be sorting pictures into past and present and discussing changes that have happened in Cardiff over the past 100 years.

W/B 14th October

For Literacy this week, pupils will be writing a recipe to make a 'Healthy, Confident Learner.' This is something we have been talking about in school over the past half term and it is one of the four core purposes of the new curriculum. In maths we are adding and taking away 10 from any 2 or 3 digit number. We are also using the laptops to log onto Purple Mash to design a building for Cardiff. Mrs Bailey and Mrs Bates are looking forward to seeing you all at parents' evening.

W/B 21st October

The final week of the first half term is here already! This week the children will be completing their end of term Abacus assessments and their reading comprehension tests. We will be reading George's Marvellous Medicine and pupils will have the opportunities to make some lovely 'medicine' using our mud kitchen area.

Thank you for a lovely start to year 2. Enjoy half term.
