Definition of ALN as stated by the 'Additional Learning Code for Wales

“Additional learning needs” (“anghenion dysgu ychwanegol”) or “ALN” has the meaning given by section 2 of the Act, namely:

(1) A person has additional learning needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability (whether the learning difficulty or disability arises from a medical condition or otherwise) which calls for additional learning provision.

(2) A child of compulsory school age or person over that age has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she—

(a) has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or

(b) has a disability for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities for education or training of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream maintained schools or mainstream institutions in the further education sector.

(3) A child under compulsory school age has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she is, or would be if no additional learning provision were made,  when of compulsory school age.

(4) A person does not have a learning difficulty or disability solely because the language (or form of language) in which he or she is or will be taught is different from a language (or form of language) which is or has been used at home.

Additional Learning Provision at Pontprennau Primary School

This video explains how Additional Learning Needs (ALN) are catered for at Pontprennau Primary School. It explains the process by which a child will be supported in class and then assessed to see whether they have ALN requiring Additional Learning Provision (ALP). For further information please read the documentation below which will be updated periodically.

Ordinarily Available Inclusive Practice (OAIP) at Pontprennau Primary School

Pontprennau Primary School is an inclusive school where we strive to ensure that all children are able to achieve to the best of their abilities.

We value each child as an individual and support them on their learning journey throughout their time with us.

Whilst support may look different for individuals, there will be certain support in place for all children to access. This used to be called Universal provision and has now been renamed as Ordinarily Available Inclusive Practice (OAIP).

OAIP within our school will consider the entitlements of all children and it is recognised that some children will need access to resources above what is generally made available to others of the same age. Children that are supported through OAIP provision may not have an ALN as their needs are met within expected classroom provision.

If you have any concerns regarding your child, please speak to the class teacher in the first instance, who will relay your concerns to the ALN team.

Definition of ALP as stated by the 'Additional Learning Code for Wales

(2) “Additional learning provision” for a child aged under three means educational provision of any kind.

(3) In subsection (1), “nursery education” means education suitable for a child who has attained the age of three but is under compulsory school age.
